Cute Penguin Card with the Wild Bunch Stamp Set

One of my favorite things about cardmaking is taking a simple stamp set and creating a scene that makes people smile. The adorable penguins in the Wild Bunch stamp set certainly did that for me!

The Wild Bunch stamp set was Stampin’ Up!’s June Product of the Month, and it turned out to be so popular that it sold out before the end of the month. While I’m always happy to see products so well loved, I know it can also be disappointing if you were hoping to get one before they were gone.

On July 1, Stampin’ Up! will release a brand-new Product of the Month. These special monthly products are only available while supplies last, so if you ever see one that you really love, it’s usually a good idea to order earlier in the month. You never know which ones will become customer favorites and sell out quickly!

Even though the Wild Bunch stamp set is no longer available, I still wanted to share today’s card because many of you already have the stamp set, and the techniques can easily be recreated with any of your favorite animal stamps.

How I Made the Card

I started by stamping one of the adorable penguins onto a piece of 2⅞” x 4⅛” Basic White cardstock using Memento Black Ink.

Next, I stamped the same penguin onto a piece of masking paper, cut it out with scissors, and placed the mask directly over the stamped image. Then I stamped two more penguins behind him. When I removed the mask, it created the fun illusion that the penguins were standing together.

I also stamped another penguin and a tiny heart onto a scrap of Basic White cardstock and fussy cut them out with scissors so I could pop them up later with Dimensionals.

The penguins were colored using Gray Granite, Smoky Slate, and Basic Black Stampin’ Blends. To add a little texture and soften the coloring on their bodies, I used the Color Lifter. Their feet were colored with the Golden Glow Stampin’ Blends.

To finish the scene, I stamped a tiny heart above the penguins and added the sentiment below them. I matted the panel with Basic Black cardstock before adhering it to the center of a Basic White card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

For another version of the card, I stamped party hats on each of the penguins and colored them with the new Crisp Cantaloupe and Golden Glow Shimmer Brushes. It’s difficult to capture in the photos, but the hats have a beautiful sparkle in person!

On the other version, I stamped and fussy cut an extra tiny heart, colored it with Flirty Flamingo and Barely Blush Stampin‘ Blends, and adhered it with a Mini Dimensional. I also popped up the extra penguin with Stampin’ Dimensionals to add a little extra depth.

It’s a simple card, but those sweet penguins have so much personality!

Even though the Wild Bunch stamp set is no longer available, I hope this project inspires those of you who own it to pull it out and create something fun. And if you missed out, don’t worry! This masking technique works wonderfully with just about any animal stamp set. It’s an easy way to create a cute little group scene that’s perfect for birthdays, friendship cards, congratulations, and so much more.
